A-V foot pumps may be used as a substitute for pneumatic compression devices in those high-risk trauma patients who cannot wear PCDs because of external fixators or casts and cannot be anticoagulated because of their injuries. It should be noted that in trauma patients, A-V foot pumps have not been shown to be as efficacious as PCDs and are associated with some significant complications.
