Anecdote:

Professional societies were formed to bring people of like interests together so that those interests can be developed for the benefit of all of the society’s members.  EAST was formed by trauma surgeons dedicated to fostering the personal and professional growth of young surgeons who shared the common interests related to the care of the injured patient, and more recently any patient with any acute surgical or critical care need: today’s Acute Care Surgeon.  The EAST Mentoring Program has paired older and younger EAST members so that the mentors can advise the younger mentees on the multitude of issues we all face and the choices that we all must make when dealing with our professional/career development.  Ronen and I have found that, in the right relationship, when each individual has an open mind and remembers that listening is probably more important than speaking, the mentor and mentee can each learn and be taught, and that a well-paired mentor/mentee partnership can foster a friendship that is likely to span both individuals’ careers.  It appears that this is the case with our new partnership, and I believe that we both look forward to many years of camaraderie, discussions and debates, an ongoing exchange of ideas, and professional growth.  Our collective thanks to EAST for the privilege of participating in the EAST Mentoring Program!
