Dr. Horn: As a resident, fellowship applicant, and provisional EAST member, getting involved in the EAST mentoring program has been a fantastic decision. Drs Savage and Martin have been wonderful in helping guide my approach to the fellowship process as well as helping me with valuable insight into programs. As a result, I'm happy to announce selection for trauma fellowship at my #1 ranked program! They have also been supportive academically with several publications in various stages of completion. Finally, they have provided valuable insight into what it takes to have a career a military academic trauma surgeon.
Dr. Ruggero: I signed up for the EAST mentoring program looking to grow myself professionally and academically. The choice of my mentoring family couldn’t have been a better fit! Despite my Middle East deployment, a global pandemic and three different time zones our mentoring family was able to have regular video calls and communicate often. The insights and personal development I gained from Dr. Martin and Dr. Savage has been career changing. I wish this was longer than a one-year program. The guidance and mentorship received has been one of a kind.
Dr. Savage: My mentoring family has been fantastic. In addition to having the chance to work with my friend and hilarious tweeter, Dr. Martin, I have met Chris Horn and John Ruggero. It has been a great pleasure getting to know two of the up-and-coming leaders in our field. Additionally, both have military backgrounds, which has provided an immediate bond. I have felt that Matt and I were able to provide some perspective on the life as a military surgeon, in addition to life as a trauma/Acute care surgeon. Their experiences and opinions on fellowship and deployment have provided a fresh perspective for me (sadly apparently in my middle years). I am confident our relationship will last after the one year of EAST mentorship has passed.
Dr. Martin: Once again, EAST is innovating and leading in their programs for developing junior surgeons/EAST members. Having a "family" rather than the usual one-on-one mentoring has been an incredible experience, and with as much benefit for the mentors as there (hopefully) has been for the mentees. Chris and John are both outstanding military surgeons who are going to be future all-stars, and it was a pleasure getting to know them and offer some guidance along with my wonderful co-mentor and badass trauma surgeon, Stephanie Savage.
