Apply for 2025-2026 Now! The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship program at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is a one-year non-accredited program that provides the opportunity for an in-depth focus on the nuances of trauma, emergency surgery and advanced operative experience. The ACS Fellow will have broad exposure on both the trauma and emergency general surgery services, with opportunity for additional sub-specialty experiences on an individual basis (i.e. Burn Surgery). The UIHC program incorporates the fellow into a junior faculty role and provides graduated autonomy, allowing the development and fine tuning of surgical skills and decision making. The fellow will take overnight call 3-4 times per month with a backup attending surgeon always available.
Acute Care Surgery Fellows will attend weekly Department of Surgery Grand Rounds/Department M&M, weekly trauma and EGS conferences, monthly Multidisciplinary Trauma Conferences, Trauma Performance Improvement and patient safety committee meetings.
Fellows work closely with every member in the Acute Care Surgery Division. There will be regular meetings between the Program Director and the Fellow, and the Program Director will share informal feedback during these times including feedback from other division attendings.
