John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County Department of Trauma and Burn is pleased to offer an International Medical Student Elective in Trauma and Burn Surgery. The goal of the International Medical Student Elective is to expose students to the advanced care of critically injured patients. The Cook County Trauma Unit’s medical student education is led by Dr. Juan Rodriguez. There is both a simulation and didactic curriculum for medical students and a very rigorous clinical experience. Medical Students will be immersed in both the operative and critical care management of injured patients. Faculty are dedicated to teaching future trauma providers. Medical students, physician assistants, surgery and emergency medicine residents all rotate on our trauma service.

The Cook County Trauma Unit is the nation’s first trauma center and the home of graduate medical education, founding the nation’s first internationally acclaimed internship in medical education. The Trauma and Burn Resuscitation Unit are distinct areas of care within our Trauma Emergency Department. The Department of Trauma and Burn Surgery has thriving divisions in Burn Surgery, Prehospital Resuscitation and Tactical Medicine, Global Trauma Surgery, and Joint Combat Trauma Education and Training which is the home of Cook County Trauma Unit’s very successful Military Civilian Partnership with the United States Navy. Today, the Cook County Trauma Unit is one of the busiest in the nation with more than 5,000 admissions per year of which 25-30% are penetrating injuries. Our trauma team provides a continuum of care for all seriously injured trauma patients from the moment they arrive at the hospital, through surgery, post-surgery and rehabilitation care. The Cook County Trauma Unit in Chicago consists of 6 full-time staff surgeons specializing in Trauma, Burn, and Critical Care.

Medical students will be required to evaluate patients in the Trauma Emergency Department, Trauma ICU and Trauma Ward Services. Medical students will participate in daily Trauma Morning Report, biweekly Trauma Fellow Case Rounds, and monthly Trauma Grand Rounds. There is also a Medical Student Trauma Case Conference. Medical students will also receive professional mentoring for their future careers in surgery or medicine. All medical students earning the high distinction of Honors will receive a Certificate of Completion.
