Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for the Eastern Virginia Medical School postgraduate programs, is a 648 bed tertiary referral center with active cardiac, transplant, vascular, oncology, neurosurgery, trauma and burn programs. Sentara Norfolk General has 26 surgical intensive care unit beds. It is the only Level One trauma center and burn center in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. An intense academic program is offered including a weekly journal club, case management discussions, interesting case conferrences, morbidity & mortality conferences, multidisciplinary trauma/burn conferences, daily teaching rounds and opportunities for clinical as well as basic science research. The fellow functions as a "junior attending."
