Pediatric Trauma Medical Director
Carilion Children’s located in Roanoke, Virginia seeks a board certified/board eligible pediatric surgeon for the role of Trauma Medical Director of our Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Carilion Children's Hospital serves as the tertiary referral center for a population of over 1 million people in southwest Virginia and provides a full range of pediatric services including the only designated Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in southwest Virginia. Carilion Children’s is located within Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a 763-bed teaching/tertiary care center, and is comprised of a standing 8-bed PICU with flex into other critical care areas, a 27-bed inpatient unit, a 60-bed NICU/intermediate nursing unit, and a 27 bed Pediatric Emergency Department. Ground and air transportation services in the region are provided by the Carilion Clinic pediatric critical care transport team.
Our Trauma Department directs both pediatric and adult trauma services. We have an adult trauma service with in-house attending staff that cares for ages 15 and above. Pediatric surgery and children’s hospital staff support any adolescent in that age range with special needs. We have American College of Surgeons and Virginia Department of Health accreditation for level 1 trauma center status. We receive on average 900-1000 patients annually for trauma activation evaluations and admit approximately 450 of those patients to our PICU and observation units. Our trauma team consists of a trauma program manager, a performance improvement nurse reviewer, an injury prevention coordinator, a registrar, all led by our Trauma Medical Director. The trauma service is supported by a team of 4 pediatric surgeons including the trauma medical director. Hospital services are inclusive of everything required for ACS level 1 status. We participate at the state, and national levels on pediatric trauma committees and collaborate on research throughout the region. The role of Trauma Medical Director will report through the Pediatric Surgery Section Chief. The TMD will participate in the Section of Pediatric Surgery with a full elective clinic and OR time and will have protected time for trauma and related research.
New construction of a tower is underway at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital scheduled to complete in 2025 and will bring more specialized pediatric space in the hospital. Enjoy working with the excellent resident support, along with established hospital-based pediatric subspecialists that include pediatric EM, hospitalists, intensivists, cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology oncology, neurology, pulmonology, endocrinology, neonatology, OB/GYN, MFM, neurosurgery, orthopedics, ENT, ophthalmology, genetics, and developmental pediatrics. There is also a new $42M remodel of the Carilion Children's outpatient center in roughly 129,000 sq ft, housing pediatric outpatient providers allowing enhanced collaboration for pediatric care.
The Section of Pediatric Surgery is in the Department of Surgery which is comprised of 77 faculty surgeons, 55 advanced care practitioners, and 47 residents/fellows in general surgery, plastic surgery, and neurosurgery residencies, with surgical critical care and advanced GI/Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowships. In 2007, Carilion partnered with Virginia Tech to create the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC. The TMD will be offered opportunities for professorship in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and research interests are supported with research funding and student teaching opportunities available.

Minimum Requirements:
Fellowship training in Pediatric Surgery, ABMS/AOA-BE/BC in Pediatric Surgery required.
