Desert Trauma Surgeons, Inc. Posted Nov 4, 2023

Palm Springs, CA

Trauma Medical Director

Position Details:

Employed position with Desert Trauma Surgeons, Inc. a private practice group that contracts with Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC) in Palm Springs, CA. The group is a shared Trauma/ICU/ACS/General Surgery practice comprised of 22 surgeons, a fully staffed NP/APP service, ACGME Surgical Critical Care fellows, and ER residents from DRMC and Eisenhower Medical Center. DRMC is a County Level I Trauma Center with an upcoming ACS Level I site visit in 2024. It is part of the Riverside County Trauma System - catchment includes two countries, three states and is the fourth largest county in California. Approximately 5000 trauma evaluations annually (10% penetrating, 90% blunt, with a high volume of blunt operative trauma). ACS volume is commensurate: approximately 1000 acute care surgery evaluations/annually (~50% operative), and ICU volume ~ 500 annually. Modernized ED and trauma infrastructure (whole blood, TEG, rib plating program, advanced wound care, robotics, and a full range of surgical subspecialists). Full-time work requirements are 16 twelve-hour shifts/month, with the opportunity for additional shifts/overtime pay if desired.

The TMD position includes a 0.5 FTE offset, granting the position a pay equivalent of having worked 16 12-hour shifts when only having to work 8 12-hour shifts (or 4 24-hour shifts per month). The offset allows the TMD ample time to complete the tasks necessary for this Level 1 Trauma Center, while not infringing upon the financial opportunities or the work-life balance that so many other institutions take for granted. In short, you’re paid for your time.

General surgery private practice opportunity as well. Service is busy but with a lot of help (average census 40-80 patients/day); the staffing model is three surgeons (one Trauma, one ACS, and one SICU) during the daytime and nighttime with backup coverage (attending/fellow/resident). The group expanded trauma/ACS services to JFK Memorial Medical Center in Indio, CA, to establish a Level IV trauma program (surgeons cover both sites). The group also manages a General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

Applicant Requirements:

MD or DO and must be certified by the American Board of Surgery. The ideal candidate will be Board-Certified in Surgical Critical Care as well. We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated, have excellent communication and leadership skills, and are goal-oriented. This position calls for someone with a strong commitment to PI and education. Previous leadership experience is a requirement.

Compensation Package:

· Competitive Compensation (negotiable depending on experience and credentials; 0.5 FTE offset built into compensation—half the shifts worked for full-time pay).
· Outstanding Benefits Package (Medical, Dental, Vision).
· Paid Malpractice (Professional Liability Insurance).
· Reimbursement for Professional Dues and Seminar Attendance.
· Retirement Plan (if desired).

Lifestyle:

Southern California lifestyle at its best. Largely regarded as a resort and vacation getaway location for retirees, snowbirds, Hollywood stars, and politicians, Palm Springs is no longer a posh getaway but is now home to many young adults who are working in remote environments post-COVID. The ideal mix for families and young alike, Palm Springs has many local recreational activities (hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, numerous parks, and museums) as well as annual attractions/festivals – Coachella, Stagecoach, Indian Wells BNP Paribas, and the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Palm Springs is also home to multiple boutique hotels, and world-renowned resorts, restaurants, and is regarded by some to be the golf capital of the world. For families, Palm Springs offers affordable living, excellent schools (private/public), and the optimal work-life balance with built-in 2 weeks of free time in the structure of the schedule, allowing you to customize your work-life schedule to your needs. Some of our surgeons live in the area, but many of our surgeons also commute from outside of Palm Springs (Orange County, Redlands, San Bernardino, Los Angeles County, San Diego).
