Section Chief – Open Rank Clinical Faculty of Trauma Surgery
The Medical College of Georgia (MCG), Department of Surgery at Augusta University (AU) is seeking a full-time Section Chief of the Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, to lead our eight (8) member Surgeon group. Wellstar at MCG is a thriving integrated academic medical center with a Level 1 Trauma Center. We average 3000 trauma activations, 1800 trauma admissions and 1200 General Surgery operations per year. We have an 18% penetrating trauma volume. We have a vibrant surgical residency, advanced practice providers and two surgical critical care fellows per year. We cover Trauma, the Trauma and Surgical Intensive care units (the latter shared with Anesthesia), Emergency General Surgery, as well as Elective General Surgery cases for the Augusta State Medical Prison. We are seeking candidates interested in leading a vibrant Trauma surgery group improving collaborative care and advancing surgical discovery. This leader would also be responsible for a new trauma service that will be started at our Wellstar Columbia County hospital that is scheduled to open in 2026. This is a level 2 Trauma Center and 2-3 Trauma surgeons will need to be hired. Referrals originate from 26 rural South Carolina and South Georgia counties. The tenure status (on tenure track, tenure upon appointment, or not on tenure track) will be determined based on the qualifications of the final candidate and will be confirmed in the final offer along with position expectations. Develop clinical practice in the field of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery.
Increase clinic visits and increase surgical volumes related to Trauma/Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery.
Participate in the call schedule with the Divisions of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery.
Teach and educate surgery residents about Trauma/Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery.
MD/DO or equivalent; Candidates should be board-certified in Surgery, with additional fellowship training in Trauma and/or Surgical Critical Care.
Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
- Evidence of ability as a teacher;
- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
