Mesh OR patch for hernia on epigastric and umbilical sites (MORPHEUS-Trial): the complete two-year follow-up.
Ponten JEH, Leclercq WKG, Lettinga T, Heemskerk J, Konsten JLM, Bouvy ND, Nienhuijs SW.
Ann Surg . 2019 Jul;270(1):33-37.

Rationale for Inclusion: This is a randomized controlled, multicenter trial comparing flat preperitoneal polypropylene mesh repair versus patch repair. The flat polypropylene mesh repair resulted in lower complication rates but saw no difference in recurrence rates.

Mesh versus suture repair of umbilical hernia in adults: a randomized, double-blind, controlled, multicenter trial.
Kaufmann R, Halm JA, Eker HH, Klitsie PJ, Nieuwenhuizen J, van Geldere D, Simons MP, van der Harst E, van 't Riet M, van der Holt B, Kleinrensink GJ, Jeekel J, Lange JF.
Lancet . 2018 Mar 3;391(10123):860-869

Rationale for Inclusion: This randomized, double-blind controlled multicenter trial concluded that mesh repair should be used on all umbilical hernia repairs of size 1-4cm as mesh repair significantly reduces the rate of recurrence compared to suture primary repair.

Is mesh always necessary in every small umbilical hernia repair? Comparison of standardized primary sutured versus patch repair: retrospective cohort study
Mitura K, Skolimowska-Rzewuska M, Rzewuska A, Wyrzykowska D.
Hernia. 2020 Mar 19.

Rationale for Inclusion: This retrospective analysis compares patch repair using ready-made synthetic mesh versus sutured repair of umbilical hernias and showed that the use of dense fascia suturing (short-stitch technique) may be an effective alternative to patch repair in patients with no significant risk factors for recurrence to avoid the higher risk of postoperative pain with mesh repair.

CAVEAT: Selection bias is the main weakness of this retrospective analysis.
