Geriatric Trauma: Parameters for Resuscitation Guideline2024
Type: New Practice Management Guideline (PMG)
Category: Trauma
Committee Liaison: Rachel D. Appelbaum, MD
Team leader(s)
Statement of Need:
The Geriatric Trauma: Parameters for Resuscitation Guideline was published in 2003, utilizing literature dated from 1980 to 1999. Since then there has been a significant increase in geriatric trauma literature that has new evidence on frailty, resuscitation measures, endpoints, as well as futility that may be taken into account for resuscitation of the injured older adult. With the publication of the 2023 ACS Geriatric verification guidelines there is an increased need for a reference for resuscitation guidelines that are congruent with current data. The original PMG for this topic had a level II recommendation for monitoring hemodynamics via a pulmonary artery catheter, which is outdated and not agreeing with current evidence for resuscitation. In addition new technology and monitoring techniques available may be considered as part of geriatric triage and resuscitation.
