Traumatic Brain Injury in Geriatrics2024
Type: New Practice Management Guideline (PMG)
Category: Trauma
Committee Liaison: Rachel D. Appelbaum, MD
Team leader(s)
Statement of Need:
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) presents a significant clinical challenge in the growing geriatric population, yet there are no clearly defined guidelines for management specific to this demographic. The aging population is at higher risk of sustaining TBIs from falls and other accidents, and the clinical presentation of TBI in this group can be atypical and complex due to age-related physiological changes and the presence of multiple coexisting medical conditions. Current guidelines primarily focus on younger populations and do not adequately address the specific diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative needs of elderly patients. Developing a dedicated guideline will facilitate the delivery of evidence-based, tailored care, improving outcomes and quality of life for this vulnerable population. It will also provide clinicians with a comprehensive framework to manage the intricacies of TBI in the geriatric demographic, ensuring consistency and efficacy in treatment protocols.
