A Review of Direct Peritoneal Resuscitation in Damage Control Abdominal Surgery2024
Type: New Evidence Based Review (EBR)
Category: Surgical Critical Care
Committee Liaison: Rachel S. Morris, MD, FACS
Team leader(s)
Statement of Need:
Damage control surgery and the open abdomen technique are critical, life-saving strategies for patients with severe life-threatening intra-abdominal conditions such as trauma or sepsis. While allowing rapid stabilization in the acute phase of illness/trauma, there are complications associated with this management at the early stages and late stages of treatment. Techniques to minimize complications and improve outcomes for patients are imperative. DPR is one such technique that has been shown to potentially benefit these patients and improve outcomes. A review of the current literature would provide insight to studies evaluating outcomes of DPR and highlight where future research should be focused.
